The FBI LA Citizens Academy Alumni Association held a Community Relations Executive Seminar Training (CREST) event on February 18, 2015 at West Los Angeles Community College.  The event, funded by a Kellogg grant and focused on promoting racial healing, was attended by over thirty people from various segments of the community.

The first speaker, Dave Reynolds, Project Director, ADL’s A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute, spoke on Bias and Hate Crimes.  He presented the bias pyramid which is a very interesting approach to breaking the chain of hate.    It begins with a broad base of behavior learned as children and culminating in possible terrorist activity.  He showed actions that could be taken at any point on the way to the top of the pyramid to divert the person from the path of hate.

The second speaker, an FBI Supervisory Special Agent, spoke on Civil Rights Violations and the investigation and prosecution of hate crimes.  He gave examples of past cases, an explanation of the nature of the crime and the steps taken to bring the perpetrator to justice.
